The researchers examined the players' executive functions – cognitive abilities such as decision-making, working memory and flexibility – and were able to link the results to actual performance on the pitch. Players who performed high in the tests accounted for more goals, assists and minutes played, which shows a clear connection between psychological factors and football performance.
